Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was instilled with the desire to explore her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise in her early years. Her aunt was a registered nurse who worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to art literature or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the art form could be utilized to engage people. DuVernay grew up with parents who were conscious of her social status and taught her how to make use of art as a method of expression. DuVernay was born with her family in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced historic civil rights march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Alabama's Selma led her later on to produce a film on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in school. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the trash of one of members of the juries. Her duties left her unhappy with journalism so she decided to pursue a career in the public relations sector. DuVernay was hired for her first gig as a publicist in an unassuming production studio following her college. In 1999, she launched her own firm of public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. Additionally, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks, such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
