Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artwork and inspiration. The aunt was on the night shift in the role of a nurse so that she could follow her passion for theater and art during the day. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. DuVernay grew up with an aunt who was knowledgeable about society and taught her how to make use of the arts to find a way of expressing herself. DuVernay who was born living with family members in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences was the Civil Rights marches that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was inspired her later to create a documentary that focused on The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. When she was still studying, DuVernay started to become interested in producing broadcast journalism. DuVernay began as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to look over the residence that one of the members of the jury and take a look at their trash. Her duties left her unhappy by journalism and she chose to pursue a career in the public relations industry. DuVernay was brought on straight from college to be an assistant publicist in a small studio. She launched in 1999 her own private company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Additionally, she launched several lifestyle and promotional networks like the Urban Beauty Collective. Autumn Riley.............................Autumn Riley was born in Los Angeles United States.
